Eighth Annual WAIS Workshop
September 20-22, 2001
Algonkian Meeting Center in Sterling, VA
The 2001 WAIS Workshop (WAIS '01) will return to the
Algonkian Meeting Center in peaceful and serene Algonkian Regional Park
situated along the Potomac River in Sterling, Virginia. This continuing
series of workshops is the primary means for exchanging information and
ideas pertinent to WAIS. They bring together the unique
multidisciplinary community of Antarctic scientists that are pursuing
the WAIS goals of understanding how rapid global climate changes occur
and how the potentially unstable West Antarctic ice sheet may affect
future sea level. You are cordially invited to attend.
The agenda will include, oral talks and panel-led
discussions of topics selected by the WAIS Working Group from the WAIS Science and Implementation Plan. There is a
liberal amount of time for discussion and poster viewing-a
characteristic that has made these workshops very effective in
information exchange across disciplinary boundaries. More agenda
details are provided below.
With the help of a modest supporting grant from NSF,
there will be a few additional distinguished scientists in attendance
who are not actively involved in WAIS research, but are central figures
in related activities. Their presence will help us put WAIS into a
global context and will help WAIS become better known throughout the
broader scientific community.
ABOUT ALGONKIAN REGIONAL PARK MEETING CENTER: Situated on the 800-acre Algonkian Regional Park, the
Meeting Center features meeting rooms with a stone fireplace, and large
windows overlooking the golf course and riverside park. Away from
ringing phones and other interruptions, Algonkian Meeting Center
provides a quiet setting for productive meetings. The park also
features 12 riverfront cottages, nature trails, boat launch ramp,
playgrounds and picnic shelters and a championship, 18-hole, par-72
golf course. Located off of Route 7 in Sterling, Algonkian Regional
Park is 15 miles from historic Leesburg and convenient to Tysons Corner
and Dulles International Airport. These cottages are very popular and
book quickly
AGENDA:
The agenda will be organized to alternate between oral
presentations and posters. Oral presentations will be limited to
contributions to the following topics.
-
What do we now know about ice streams starting
and stopping?
-
What is going on in the Pine Island/Thwaites
Glaciers sector?
-
What is US ITASE telling us about the last few
hundred years in West Antarctica?
-
What is the Siple Dome ice core telling us about
the last few thousand years in West Antarctica?
These topics will be addressed the first two days of the
workshop. Following each set of oral presentations, a panel will lead
the audience in a discussion to probe more deeply our current
understanding of the specific topic. This format has proven very
effective in past workshops.
Poster presentations can be on any WAIS topic and will
be the focus during the many extended breaks. Posters are viewable for
the full course of the meeting.
Concluding the meeting, Saturday morning, will be a
discussion of our progress toward, and understanding of, our dual
goals. We will also hear from our distinguished guests and discuss how
WAIS should proceed during this time. The workshop is scheduled to end
by lunch on Saturday-early enough for most travelers to get home that
evening.
Abstracts are due and registration closes July 31, 2001.
This will give the organizers time to make cottage assignments and
establish the agenda. Both will be viewable on-line at this web site
along with the full text of each abstract. A printed copy of the
abstracts will be distributed to each attendee at the workshop.
EARLY MEETING ON AMUNDSEN SEA EMBAYMENT:
To take advantage of the expected participants attending
WAIS '01, there will be a meeting on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 (the
day before WAIS '01 begins) to discuss joint US/UK Research in the Pine
Island Glacier/Thwaites Glacier area. The goal of this meeting will be
to scope the anticipated research by US scientists and to seek
effective coordination with the British Antarctic Survey. The document
"Strawman Science Motivation for Coordinated Multidisciplinary
Research in the Amundsen Sea Embayment, West Antarctica" was
prepared following last year's WAIS workshop and forms the basis for
this meeting. Interested people are urged to read this document prior
to the meeting. Sridhar Anandakrishnan will chair this meeting and the
document can be obtained from http://ice.geo.ua.edu/~sak/PIG
or by contacting Sridhar at sak@ua.edu.
This meeting will take place at the Algonkian Center.
Expression of interest in attending this meeting is included in the
WAIS '01 registration form (link is below).
