Fifteenth Annual WAIS Workshop
October 8 - 11, 2008

The 2008 WAIS Workshop (WAIS '08) will return to the
peaceful and serene
Algonkian Regional Park situated along the Potomac River in Sterling, Virginia.
This continuing series of workshops is the primary means for exchanging
information and ideas pertinent to WAIS. In the spirit of the International
Polar Year, this year's workshop occurs in addition to the second joint
FRISP/WAIS workshop
(held September 18-20 in Derbyshire, U.K.). Science highlights of the FRISP/WAIS
workshop will be reported at WAIS '08. These two workshops expand the unique
multidisciplinary gathering of Antarctic scientists that are seeking to understand
the nature of West Antarctica and its potential contribution to future sea level.
The formal agenda will begin Thursday morning (October
9), and include oral talks and panel-led discussions of topics
selected by the WAIS Working Group and FRISP leaders.
There is a liberal amount of time
for discussion and poster viewing - a characteristic that has made these
workshops very effective for information exchange across disciplinary
boundaries. More agenda details are provided below.
With the help of a modest supporting grant from NSF (National Science Foundation),
there will be a few additional distinguished scientists in attendance
who are not actively involved in WAIS research, but are central figures
in related activities. Their presence will help us put WAIS into a
global context and will help WAIS become better known throughout the
broader scientific community.
ABOUT ALGONKIAN REGIONAL PARK MEETING CENTER
Situated on the 800-acre Algonkian Regional Park, the
newly renovated Meeting Center features meeting rooms with a stone fireplace, and large
windows overlooking the golf course and riverside park. Away from
ringing phones and other interruptions, Algonkian Meeting Center
provides a quiet setting for productive meetings. The park also
features 12 riverfront cottages, nature trails, boat launch ramp,
playgrounds and picnic shelters and a championship, 18-hole, par-72
golf course. Located off of Route 7 in Sterling, Algonkian Regional
Park is 15 miles from historic Leesburg and convenient to Tysons Corner
and Dulles International Airport. These cottages are very popular and
book quickly.
AGENDA
The agenda will be organized to alternate between oral
presentations and posters. Oral presentations are limited to
contributions on the following topics.

These topics will be addressed during the two and one-half days of the
workshop (Thursday to Saturday noon). Following each set
of oral presentations, a panel will lead the audience in a discussion
to probe more deeply our current understanding of the specific topic.
This format has proven very effective in past workshops.
Poster presentations can be on any aspect of WAIS or FRISP research and will
be the focus during the many extended breaks. Posters will be on
display throughout the workshop.
Concluding the meeting, will be a discussion of our progress toward,
and understanding of, our goals. We will also hear from our distinguished
guests and discuss how WAIS should proceed over the next year and
through the International Polar Year. The workshop is scheduled to end
by lunch Saturday - early enough for many travelers to get home that
evening.
Abstracts are due and registration closes September 5,
2008. This will give the organizers time to make rooming
assignments and establish the agenda. Both will be viewable on-line at
this web site along with the full text of each abstract. A printed copy
of the abstracts will be distributed to each attendee at the workshop.
An electronic copy will be posted on this web site as well.
LODGING
RIVERFRONT COTTAGE ACCOMMODATIONS
The cottages are located within Algonkian Regional Park and
are walking distance to the meeting center. There are 12 cottages
ranging in size from two to five bedrooms with space for 45 people.
Most bedrooms have a double bed; some have two twin beds. All except one cottage
have been reserved for this workshop beginning Wednesday evening. A 3-night
stay will cost approximately $425 per person and include continental
breakfast and lunch each day. For persons wishing to stay Saturday
night, the additional night will cost $55 (no Sunday breakfast).
Cottage assignments and final cost will be determined after
registration closes (September 5, 2008). Harris Corporation will
contact you in early September with payment instructions.
Check-in time is no earlier than 3:00 pm Wednesday (October
8), and check-out is no later than 11am Saturday (or Sunday).
Pre-registration will take place from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Wednesday inside
the Conference Center at which time cottage keys will be available.
After this time, you may proceed to Cottage #1 and meet with Bob to
collect your keys. The main gate to the park is locked at around 10:00
pm. If you plan to arrive after 10:00 pm, please be sure to call Bob in
his cottage (703-450-0001) so he can unlock the gate for you.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
Individuals who would like to stay in a hotel are requested to use the Hampton
Inn, (46331 McClellan, Sterling, VA 20165). It is just 10 minutes
from the meeting site and close to local shopping and restaurants. A
block of rooms has been reserved for workshop participants. Room rates
are $141 (single/double) plus tax. Phone the hotel directly at
703-450-9595 and state that you are attending the "WAIS" Workshop
to receive this group rate. Lunch will be provided at the
meeting site. The cut-off date to make reservations is September 8,
2008. The hotel provides a shuttle from Washington Dulles Airport (on
request) and will shuttle people back and forth to Algonkian (arrange
with front desk).
MEALS
A continental breakfast and a lunch for all registrants
is included each day of the workshop. Dinner is optional (Thursday and
Friday only) at $20 per person per day. A variety of restaurants is
available approximately 5 miles away. Attendees are encouraged to
remain at the meeting center in the evening for informal socializing
and poster-viewing. Wednesday night an informal pizza and beverages
get-together is planned in Cottage #1 courtesy of the WAIS Working
Group Chair.
AIR TRAVEL
Dulles International Airport is approximately 15-20
minutes from Algonkian Regional Park and is the most convenient airport.
GROUND TRANSPORTATION
For persons staying at Algonkian, the most convenient
transportation is The Washington Flyer Taxicab: 703-685-1400, metered
fare, always available near baggage claim.
The Hampton Inn provides a complimentary shuttle service
to and from the airport. Call from the hotel shuttle station in the
baggage claim area.
For persons driving:
From the Airport to Algonkian: Take Route 28 North/Sully Road to Route 7 East. On Route 7
East, take the Cascades Parkway north and drive 3 miles to the park
entrance. Follow signs to the Conference Center.
From the Hampton Inn to Algonkian: Return to North Cascades Parkway and turn right (north) . 3
miles to the park entrance and follow signs to the Conference Center.
The drive takes about 10 minutes.
From the Airport to the Hampton Inn: Take Dulles Airport Access Road towards Washington D.C.
Take exit 9B (Sulley Road/28 North) towards Sterling. Take Route 7 East
to Cascades Parkway North, make a right on Carnston St., make a right
on South Bank St., and a final left onto McClellan Way.
From local area to Algonkian:
From the North: Take the
Beltway (495) West (toward Tysons Corner) to Rt. 7 West, Leesburg Pike.
Travel about 12 miles to Cascades Parkway North. This will end at
Algonkian Park. Enter the park and proceed to the Conference Center.
From the South: Take the Beltway (495)
West (toward Rockville) to 267 West (Dulles Toll Road) to Exit 9B (Rt.
28/Sully Road). Follow Rt. 28 North to Rt. 7 East, Leesburg Pike. Take
the next exit, Cascade Parkway North. This will end at Algonkian Park.
Enter the park and proceed to the Conference Center.
