Sixteenth Annual WAIS Workshop (this year held jointly with FRISP)
September 27 - 29, 2009
Pack Forest Conference Center in Eatonville, Washington

The 2009 WAIS/FRISP Workshop (WAIS '09) will take place in the Seattle, Washington area, at the Pack Forest Conference Center situated near Mount Rainier National Park. This continuing series of workshops is the primary means for exchanging information and ideas pertinent to WAIS. In the spirit of the recently completed International Polar Year, this year's workshop is a joint meeting with the FRISP (Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes) community. This combination of communities will expand the unique multidisciplinary gathering of Antarctic scientists that are seeking to understand the nature of West Antarctica and its potential contribution to future sea level. You are cordially invited to attend.

The formal agenda will begin Sunday morning (September 27), and include oral talks and panel-led discussions of topics selected by the WAIS Working Group (see the WAIS Science and Implementation Plan) and FRISP leaders. There is a liberal amount of time for discussion and poster viewing - a characteristic that has made these workshops very effective for information exchange across disciplinary boundaries. More agenda details are provided below.

With the help of a modest supporting grant from NSF (National Science Foundation), there will be a few additional distinguished scientists in attendance who are not actively involved in WAIS research, but are central figures in related activities. Their presence will help us put WAIS into a global context and will help WAIS become better known throughout the broader scientific community.

ABOUT PACK FOREST CONFERENCE CENTER

This center belongs to the University of Washington's College of Forest Resources. It is a beautiful site, has lots of space, is managed by a helpful and courteous staff, and the food is tasty. Follow this link for more detailed information about the Pack Forest Conference Center.

AGENDA

The agenda will be organized to alternate between oral presentations and posters. Oral presentations are limited to contributions on the following topics.

  • "Doctors with a Drill" - Where, why and when should the next deep ice core in West Antarctica be drilled?

  • "Exposed!" - If the ice sheet were largely removed during the last interglacial, what would we find at the bottom of WAIS Divide or elsewhere revealing this history?

  • "Shelf-Life" - How intense is the interaction of the ocean with the ice shelves and what is expected in the future?

  • "Up & Down We Go" - Active subglacial hydrology and what it might mean for West Antarctica's future

  • "Life on the Edge" - What is happening, once happened or might happen beyond the ice sheet margin that relates to the future of West Antarctica?

  • "Answering the Call" - How are models being used to predict the future of the ice sheet and future sea level?

These topics will be addressed during the workshop. Following each set of oral presentations, a panel will lead the audience in a discussion to probe more deeply our current understanding of the specific topic. This format has proven very effective in past workshops.

Poster presentations can be on any WAIS or FRISP topic and will be the focus during the many extended breaks. Posters will be on display throughout the workshop in a room near the main meeting room.

Concluding the meeting, will be a discussion of our progress toward, and understanding of, our goals. We will also hear from our distinguished guests and discuss how WAIS should proceed over the next year and through the International Polar Year. The workshop is scheduled to end Tuesday afternoon.

Registration closes August 14, 2009 and abstracts are due August 31, 2009. This will give the organizers time to make rooming assignments and establish the agenda. Both will be viewable on-line at this web site along with the full text of each abstract.
